Precision Treatment for Enlarged Prostate (BPH)

Laser prostate surgery is a minimally invasive procedure designed to relieve urinary symptoms caused by Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)—a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. Using advanced laser technology, this procedure removes excess prostate tissue with minimal bleeding, shorter recovery time, and fewer side effects compared to traditional surgery.

What Is Laser Prostate Surgery?

Laser prostate surgery involves using focused laser energy to vaporize or enucleate the enlarged prostate tissue blocking urine flow. It is performed through the urethra without any external incisions. Common laser techniques include:

  • HoLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate)
  • GreenLight™ Laser Therapy
  • Thulium Laser Enucleation (ThuLEP)

These procedures provide long-term relief from urinary symptoms and are safe for men taking blood thinners or with high surgical risk.

Why Consider Laser Prostate Surgery?

If you’re experiencing one or more of the following due to BPH, laser surgery may be the solution:

  • Frequent or urgent urination, especially at night
  • Weak or interrupted urine stream
  • Difficulty starting urination
  • Incomplete bladder emptying
  • Urinary tract infections due to retention

Dependence on catheters or failure of medication therapy

Advantages of Laser Prostate Surgery

  • Minimally invasive – no external cuts or stitches
  • Quick symptom relief – improved urine flow shortly after surgery
  • Low risk of bleeding – ideal for patients on anticoagulants
  • Short hospital stay – often performed as a day surgery
  • Preserves bladder function – reduces risk of long-term complications
  • Long-lasting results – comparable or superior to traditional TURP

Types of Laser Procedures We Offer

Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP)

The most comprehensive laser procedure for moderate to severely enlarged prostates. HoLEP removes obstructing tissue completely, providing durable relief and lower retreatment rates.

GreenLight™ Laser Therapy

Uses high-powered green light to vaporize prostate tissue quickly and safely. Often preferred for smaller to moderately enlarged prostates, and can be performed on an outpatient basis.

Thulium Laser Enucleation (ThuLEP)

A newer technique offering similar benefits to HoLEP with potentially faster recovery and less bleeding.

What to Expect: Before, During & After Surgery

Before Surgery:

  • Detailed consultation, medical history review, and imaging (e.g., ultrasound or MRI)
  • PSA testing and assessment of urinary symptoms
  • Instructions on fasting, medications, and anesthesia preparation

During the Procedure:

  • Performed under general or spinal anesthesia
  • A laser is inserted through the urethra to remove or vaporize excess prostate tissue
  • Procedure time varies depending on prostate size (usually 30–90 minutes)

After Surgery:

  • Temporary catheter placed for 1–2 days to aid healing
  • Mild burning or urgency for a few days
  • Most men return to normal activities within 1 week
  • Full healing and symptom improvement typically occur over 2–4 weeks
